ABOUT THE DONKEY SANTUARY

Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society Inc, established in 1991, is an animal welfare organization making a difference for all animals in Antigua and Barbuda through the prevention of cruelty and the protection of animals. The Humane Society is registered as a non-profit corporation under the laws of Antigua & Barbuda and is audited annually by Grant Thornton.

We foster appropriate relationships, between humans and animals, and encourage responsible animal ownership. We also support government and community institutions with matters relating to the role of animals in society and are committed to assisting our own public and visitors with their concerns about animals.

We encourage compassion for animals and are particularly concerned to instill kindness to animals in our children. We have found that children are more open to developing healthy, positive relationships with animals and with each other, when they learn to be compassionate towards animals from a young age.

In 2004, the Humane Society submitted draft legislation to Government for a system of dog identification and registration. The Dog Registration and Control Act was finally enacted in 2006 and it is now mandatory that all dogs over the age of 6 months be microchipped and registered, and wear a dog tag. Registration fees are dramatically reduced for spayed/neutered dogs. The Act also includes provisions for humane care and control of dogs, including a provision that all dogs be on their owners’ property or under their owners’ direct control at all times.

The Team at the Humane Society works extremely hard and is very solutions driven. Despite challenges we may face from natural disasters and financial issues, we remain committed to working towards our goals.

TAKE ME HOME PET ADOPTION PROGRAM

Our Take Me Home pet adoption program pairs our shelter dogs and cats with individuals and families willing to open their hearts and homes to their future companions.

As part of the program, all dogs are wormed, treated for fleas and ticks and spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted puppies. If the pup is too young to be spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, the adopter is required to bring the pup back for one day to have the surgery. The cost of the spay/neuter is included in the adoption fee which is $100.00. All dogs are also required by law to be microchipped and licensed. The annual license fee is $20.00. This is done at the shelter either at the time of adoption or at the time of the surgery

Similarly, all cats and kittens are wormed, treated for fleas and litter box trained. They are also spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted kittens. If they are too young to have had their surgery before leaving the shelter, adopters are required to bring them back for a day when they are old enough. The spay/neuter fee is included in the adoption fee which is $80.00.

We welcome you to visit our facilities during our hours of operation – Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am – 3:00pm and most public holidays.

DONATE TO HELP SAVE LIVES

Each year, the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society provides temporary homes for hundreds of abandoned dogs and cats in the island. We also run the donkey sanctuary that feeds and homes over 150 of the nation’s donkeys.

As the temporary home of the dogs and cats, we must ensure that the animals are fed, receive the appropriate medical and health care, and provide a safe environment where they can thrive until we find them their forever homes.

As the permanent home for our rescued donkeys, we must protect them against drought conditions where food becomes scarce, provide appropriate medical and health care and provide a safe, loving environment where they will spend the rest of their lives in safety.

These community resource services help to save the lives of the animals but they are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. That’s why we need your support. Without the assistance of donors and friends like you, our life-saving work in the community would not be possible.

There are several ways that you can help with a donation:

VOLUNTEER

The Team at the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society are amazing. They perform a myriad of duties each day. They sweep, mop, wash and fill food bowls, tidy litter boxes, clean out cages, manage the animal feedings, prepare for new arrivals, attend to visitors and the list goes on. Because of their demanding work load, they do not often have the time to spend time with the animals, petting and walking them. Here’s where you can help!

As a volunteer, you can assist us with a number of activities and day-to-day operational duties. We understand that your time is valuable and we appreciate your assistance with carrying out our mission.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATIONS

Over the years the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society and Antigua’s Donkey Sanctuary have welcomed many wonderful volunteers who came from overseas to help with the cats and dogs at the shelter and the donkeys at the sanctuary.

To assist volunteers with accommodations, we have renovated and repurposed an existing hay barn into a volunteer apartment. The project is almost complete as can be seen from these photos. We are very proud of the work that has been completed so far.

Our hope is that the apartment will attract even more volunteers who will now be able to stay on site. There is so much work to be done at the shelter and the sanctuary and, with our small staff count, we are very grateful for all the help that we can get.

Please Contact Us to reserve the volunteer apartment for your next stay.
